What is the Post-9/11 GI Bill?
Military service members and veterans have sacrificed their time and expertise to protect our country and its people. For this dedication, there are benefits available to help service members and veterans to more successfully transition to civilian life.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill was created to provide financial support for education and housing to those with a minimum of 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001. The bill also applies to those who were honorably discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days.
Benefits from the Post-9/11 GI Bill are payable for training pursued on or after August 1, 2009. These benefits allow service members and veterans to attend education and training programs from accredited colleges or universities. The benefit payments of this bill are tiered based on the amount of creditable active-duty service the service member or veteran has had since September 10, 2001.
For veterans who are eligible, the VA will pay tuition and fees payments directly to the school you are attending. The tuition and fees rates at a state college or university will cover up to the full amount based on the number of months of active service since September 11, 2001.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill includes a provision known as the Yellow Ribbon Program. This program helps students reduce or eliminate some or all of the out-of-pocket tuition and fees that can come with education programs exceeding the Post 9/11 GI Bill tuition benefit. However, for the Yellow Ribbon Program to work, schools must enter into an agreement with the VA in order to share the expense.
Eligible veterans and members of the National Guard or Selected Reserve may receive a monthly housing allowance based on the ZIP code of the school of attendance. As of October 1, 2011, students who take 100% of their courses online are eligible for a monthly stipend equal to half of the national average stipend. For 2011, this amount is $673.50.
Additionally, an annual book stipend is available for eligible veterans or members of the Guard or Selected Reserves. As of October 1, 2011, Active-duty service members and eligible spouses are also able to utilize this stipend.
Most notably, Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits can be transferred to any dependents (such as spouse and children). The Department of Defense will allow individuals who, on or after August 1, 2009, have served at least 6 years in the Armed Forces and who agree to serve at least another 4 years to transfer unused benefits to their spouse. Upon the service member's 10-year anniversary, they can then elect to transfer the benefit to dependents. There are additional eligibility requirements for this to occur.
Through the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you can begin working toward your degree and have some of the costs covered. With the changes implemented on October 1, 2011, service members and veterans will find that the benefits cover more than previous. This makes today a good time to start giving back to yourself by taking advantage of the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
