Post-9/11 GI Bill Questions - Find Answers Here

Whenever there are changes made to helpful programs such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, there are also questions. On October 1, 2011, the Post-9/11 GI Bill changed in several ways that benefit both active duty service members and veterans. Here is an overview of what to expect:

• Veterans and active-duty service members are eligible to receive a portion of the national monthly housing allowance rate when they enroll in distance learning courses. Full-time online students qualify for a housing allowance of $673.50, which is equal to half of the 2011 national average stipend.
• For eligible veterans, tuition and fees payments will be paid directly to the school of attendance. The tuition and fees rates found at a state college or university will cover up to the full amount. This will be based on the number of months of active service since September 11, 2001.
• Veterans or members of the Guard or Selected Reserves currently receive an annual book stipend and, as of October 1, 2011, active-duty service members and eligible spouses can also use this stipend.
• The Post-9/11 GI Bill will also be extended to include active service performed by National Guard members for the purpose of organizing, administering, recruiting, instructing or training the National Guard, or for responding to national emergencies. This particular benefit became effective August 1, 2009, but is not payable until October 1, 2011.
• There are additional changes that include payment for non-degree granting schools, on-the-job and apprenticeship training, flight programs and correspondence training.

The VA implemented these changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The changes will help reduce the financial burden for military and veteran students who wish to pursue their degrees, as well as allow more to participate in the program.
