The New GI Bill - Learn More About the Post-9/11 GI Bill

Can you take a good thing and make it better? Yes, you can. Congress has made recent changes to the popular Post-9/11 GI Bill that will further help reduce the financial burdens of higher education so that veterans can achieve their educational goals.

Changes to the new GI Bill, which took place on October 1, 2011, enable veterans and active-duty service members to be eligible to receive a portion of the national monthly housing allowance rate when enrolled only in distance learning courses. This is equal to half of the national average stipend, which is $673.50 for 2011 if you are attending full-time.

Additionally, for veterans who are eligible, the VA will pay tuition and fees payments directly to the school of attendance. The tuition and fees rates at a state college or university will cover up to the full amount based on the number of months of active service since September 11, 2001.

The VA is implemented the new changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The VA is also reaching out to colleges and universities to participate in the Yellow Ribbon program, to help students avoid out-of-pocket costs that may exceed their benefits.

The Yellow Ribbon program helps students reduce, and even eliminate, some or all of the out-of-pocket tuition and fees that can come with education programs that exceed their tuition benefits. Only those schools who have entered into an agreement with the VA in order to share the expense may offer the Yellow Ribbon Program.

An annual book stipend is currently available for eligible veterans or members of the Guard or Selected Reserves and, as of October 1, 2011, active-duty service members and eligible spouses are also use this stipend.

Finally, the Post-9/11 GI Bill will be extended to include active service performed by National Guard members for the purpose of organizing, administering, recruiting, instructing or training the National Guard or for the purpose of responding to a national emergency. While this became effective August 1, 2009, it is not payable until October 1, 2011.

The changes to the Post-9/11 GI Bill enables military and veteran students to more easily pursue degrees by reducing financial constraints and allowing many more into the program.
