Applying for Federal Student Aid

The Financial Aid Office at AAU administers Federal Pell Grants and Federal Direct Loans. Federal Student Aid (FSA) from the U.S. Department of Education is the largest source of aid in America and we encourage students to apply. Students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every award year to be considered for financial aid. The following steps are meant to help you get started in applying for financial aid. Please do not hesitate to call the Financial Aid Office if you need assistance.

New Students Applying for Federal Student Aid

New students wishing to enroll at AAU for the first time using Federal Student Aid (FSA) should complete the steps listed below at least four weeks prior to the last day of registration. Please note that some student applications for financial aid take longer to process than others as a result of factors beyond the control of AAU. Students who do not receive their aid award by the last day of registration will need to pay out-of-pocket and be reimbursed or delay registration.

Step 1: Obtain a PIN
Filling the FAFSA electronically is the fastest way to apply for financial aid. To electronically sign your FAFSA you may obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) online at www.pin.ed.gov. This number may also be used to make corrections to your Student Aid Report (SAR), and monitor federal loans that you receive. If you are a dependent student, a parent should also request a PIN, which can be used as their electronic signature on the FAFSA.

Step 2: File a FAFSA
Complete, sign and submit the FAFSA. The FAFSA may be completed electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Please be certain to include AAU’s Federal School Code 041893 on your FAFSA for the application data to be sent to AAU.

If you are currently enrolled in courses at AAU or plan to start courses before July 1, 2012, please complete the 2011-2012 FAFSA. If you plan to enroll in courses that begin after July 1, 2012, please complete the 2012-2013 FAFSA.

Students must re-apply for financial aid each award year.

Step 3: Additional Documentation
Monitor your email for important notifications concerning your financial aid status. You will be notified in writing by the Financial Aid Office if additional documentation is required from you.

Step 4: Awarding Financial Aid
Financial Aid is awarded by academic year. The Financial Aid Office will produce an award letter which will outline a student’s financial aid eligibility.

Step 5: Complete MPN and Entrance Counseling
Students who accept a Federal Direct Loan and have not received a Federal Direct Loan at Allied American University must complete Entrance Counseling and a Master Promissory Note (MPN) at www.studentloans.gov before receiving their first student loan disbursement.
