Pharmacy Technician Certificate Program
A certificate in Pharmacy Technician helps students prepare for the PTCB certification exam. With the BLS projecting an increase in the number of jobs in the pharmacy technician field, there will be opportunities to assist pharmacists with day-to-day operational duties in pharmacies nationwide. A certificate from AAU will prepare students to gain the educational foundation to perform traditional pharmacist functions, specifically in drug distribution, inventory management, pharmacy administration, and serving patients.
Required Pharmacy Technician Certificate Courses
ENG160: English Composition 1
Credits: 3
Prerequisite: ENG105
This English Composition 1 course is designed to help students master the traditional five-paragraph essay along with its variations. Students will learn how to support a thesis with specific evidence and how to write an effective introduction, conclusion, and title. Students will learn how to develop the nine patterns of essay development. Throughout the course, students will review all the basic grammar rules, and they will also review and apply proper APA Style.
MAT110: Beginning Algebra
Credits: 3
Prerequisite: MAT105
Beginning Algebra helps students learn the basic mathematical concepts of algebra before they move on to the next level in their mathematics curriculum. This Beginning Algebra course prepares students by having them apply some of the most common formulas and theorems.

MAT120: College Algebra
Credits: 3
Prerequisite: MAT110
This College Algebra course provides students with a working knowledge of college-level algebra. Algebra is the study of equations, inequalities, and functions. This course concentrates on linear and quadratic equations, word problems, polynomials, and rational and radical equations. Students will also learn about graphs and applications of algebra to the real world.
MED183: Pharmacy Technician
Credits: 3
Prerequisite: None
This Pharmacy Technician course is designed to teach the basics of the pharmacy technician profession and includes textbook readings with many in-depth exercises, step-by-step instruction, including media-assisted learning, and supplementary informational resources. The numerous topics that students will learn about include the essentials of medical history, pharmacy settings, drug regulation and administration, appropriate terminology, formulating and calculating prescriptions, biopharmaceutics, informational pharmacy resources, elements of patient interaction, varying pharmaceutical environments, and related issues.
MED283: Pharmacy Calculations
Credits: 3
Prerequisite: MAT110 or MAT120
This Pharmacy Calculations course is designed to teach the basics of pharmacy calculations and includes textbook readings with many practice exercises and step-by-step instructions, including media-assisted learning. Math is the central part of pharmaceutical care. Understanding mathematical concepts is critical to the success of the pharmacy technician. This course is enhanced with instructional webcasts that will help students learn how to perform the pharmaceutical calculations. Students will also learn how to calculate commonly encountered problems that are faced by the pharmacy technician working in the community pharmacy as well as the pharmacy technician working in the institutional pharmacy. The Pharmacy Calculations course will first focus on basic arithmetic and then will center on performing calculations for the community pharmacy calculations and will conclude with computing calculations for the institutional pharmacy.
BIO268: Introduction to Pharmacology
Credits: 3
Prerequisites: None
This Introduction to Pharmacology course is designed to teach the basics of pharmacology. Students will learn to differentiate among drug classifications, terminology, spelling conventions, pronunciations, including a thorough review of mathematics and dosage calculations. Clinical implications and contraindications are reviewed for each body system. Special considerations are also discussed in detail for children, pregnant and nursing women, the aging patient population, end-of-life care, substance abuse, and herbal or alternative drug/herb interactions.
