Students receive specialized instruction in probation, parole, juvenile justice and correctional institutions. Ethics in criminal justice, correctional counseling and treatment, probation, parole, prison and jail administration, as well as the juvenile justice system, will also be studied.

CRJ240: Juvenile Justice (From B.S. Criminal Justice Degree)

3 Semester Credits
Prerequisite: CRJ100

This course provides an orientation to the area of juvenile delinquency, including the origins, causes and courses of development of delinquent behavior. The course outlines problems facing modern juveniles, and compares adult and juvenile justice systems. Topics include intervention, apprehension, referral and preventive techniques. Finally the course outlines the problems inherent in police handling juveniles and the function of juvenile courts.

CRJ300: Probation and Parole (Undistributed Elective)

3 Semester Credits
Prerequisite: None

This course addresses probation and parole for both juvenile and adult populations. It discusses topics such as restorative justice, community-based supervision, evidence-based practice, offender re-entry, and other state-of-the-art practices. It is designed to engage students as they critically examine the current controversial issues impacting the system.

CRJ302: Effective Professional Communication (From B.S. Criminal Justice Degree Program)

3 Semester Credits
Prerequisite: None

This course provides an understanding of research and communications in a professional environment. It familiarizes students with the techniques, strategies and forms of writing used in the professional world. This course will increase students' knowledge of organizational writing and communications including case analysis, data interpretation, problem solving and report writing.

CRJ305: Ethics in Criminal Justice (From B.S. Criminal Justice Degree Program)

3 Semester Credits
Prerequisite: None

This course explores ethical standards and codes in criminal justice professions. The scope of the course covers the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics, American Bar Association's Standards of Professional Responsibility, the American Jail Association Code of Ethics and the American Correctional Association Code of Ethics. It also explores roles of professional organizations and agencies, ethics and community relations and civil liability in law enforcement and correctional environments. The students will study cases presented to illustrate ethical issues and derive solutions to ethical dilemmas using critical thinking.

CRJ310: Correctional Counseling and Treatment (Undistributed Elective)

3 Semester Credits
Prerequisite: None

This course teaches students how to apply evidence-based counseling and treatment approaches to rehabilitate offenders by helping to enhance offenders' mental health, cognitive functioning, academic achievements, vocational aptitude, and social skills. Each module is designed to raise important issues, formalize ideas, and document best practices from which effective correctional programs can be replicated.

CRJ315: Prison and Jail Administration (Undistributed Elective)

3 Semester Credits
Prerequisite: None

This course discusses the corrections system in America, both past and present, with a current focus on institutional responsibilities to inmates, including security, inmate management, education and vocational training, recreation, healthcare, food service, and religious programming. It also covers public relations in the field of corrections and examines the role of media and politics and how these two entities relate to the public image of crime and supervision. This course also explores emergency planning and prevention in the correctional setting.
